This page contains prints from the theatre tradition of Ukiyo-e. The energy and character of the actors portrayed make the prints very approachable for Western viewers. They are very much appreciated by Japanese viewers. When produced they were treated almost as throw-away items, handbills used to advertise the play and to be pasted to walls in the neighbourhood of the theatre. The reproductions here are mostly by Sharaku whose originals today are almost all in the hands of museums and art galleries.
