Welcome to Ukiyo-e Reproductions

Providing you with access to the best modern reproductions of classic Japanese Woodblock prints

Japanese woodblock prints from the time between the middle of the 17th century and the middle of the 19th century were popular art. They were designed for the sector of the population which, at that time, was evolving into the middle classes and combined elements of entertainment, accessibility, gossip and advertising. These elements were instantly recognised by the first Europeans who were allowed into Japan in the 1850's. The prints had a profound influence on contemporary European art. Today we might say that they combined the attractions of Vogue, National Geographic and Playboy in about equal proportions.

Today the products of the great creative period are available still for purchase but are in limited supply, are very expensive and are fragile. Their colours have faded, the paper on which they were printed has become toned, has been attacked by insects and is often soiled and stained. They are vulnerable to further deterioration from the efects of sunlight, humidity and handling.

However the tradition has been maintained in Japan and both original new woodblock prints are being produced today as well as reproductions of famous prints by masters from the times of the great creative artists. These reproductions are faithful to the original production techniques and have all the physical beauty of the originals without the faded colours and aged paper. They also are much more affordable than the originals. This site offers information about excellent quality reproduction Ukiyo-e prints from contemporary production houses. It is also a source of such prints and of a number of good quality reproductions from earlier in the 20th century.
