Warming their hands, and one his bottom, four kago bearers group around a fire they have made. A traveller, pipe in hand, hesitates to join them. The rising plume of smoke and the strong vertical of the tree divide the print neatly in two. Perhaps this is Hiroshige's way of suggesting that this is the exact halfway point between Edo and Kyoto, with the road, hidden by the grassy bank, curving away to right and to left.
