A seascape with Fuji glimpsed in the trough of a great wave that is breaking in jagged foam upon three boats riding in the hollows. Colour is limited to the varying blue of the waves, the yellow of the boat timbers, a pale pink cloud and modulated greys. The most famous of all Hokusai's prints and one of the few prints universally admired in both Eastern and Western worlds.
