This category of print was not common during the golden age of Ukiyo-e. In the late 19th century, with the growth of Japanese militarism, it became very fashionable with whole series of prints produced on the Japan-Russion war, for example. There were series of great generals and many treatments of the 47 ronin story that allowed artists to show men in costumes that were nearly as gorgeous as some of the womens kimonos.
